Callers give O'Malley an earful

There's no politician in the state as deft in handling the media as Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley. Yesterday, O'Malley settled into his new role as rookie radio talk show host.

He got a polite earful.

On one line, Robert from Canton was complaining about a water leak. On another, Dorie from Northeast Baltimore described troubles with late property tax bills, while Fran from Phoenix vented because she couldn't get drug-dealing tenants evicted at a property she owns in the city.

Neda Ulaby, NPR Biography

Neda Ulaby reports on arts and culture for NPR. Her work includes profiling authors, musicians, and others who inform the world through creative expression, and covering the complicated relationships between art, artists, and society.

Ulaby came to NPR in 2000. She was recruited through NPR's Next Generation Radio Initiative, and first helped to produce Weekly Edition: The Best of NPR. After landing a position on the cultural desk as an editorial assistant, she started reporting regularly for the desk, augmenting her radio work with arts journalism for the Washington City Paper.

Ulaby's stories include a series on women record producers and a piece on the overlap between opera lovers and aging fans of punk rock. Her obituary for musician Elliott Smith set a record for downloads from the NPR Web site.

Leading questions addressed

There was no bigger name than Joe Torre, who rejected the Yankees' offer of a pay cut, leaving the door ajar for Torre protégé Don Mattingly or Joe Girardi. Torre is a free agent, but for the time being there's no place to go. You can bet he'll be in the mix should things fall through with the Dodgers or Mets, or perhaps be the replacement in Atlanta when Bobby Cox retires after next season.

The Yankees have groomed Mattingly as Torre's replacement for a few years. They must have believed he was ready to take the reins or they wouldn't have made Torre an offer they knew he would refuse. It'll be awfully hard to bypass the popular Mattingly. Those who watch the Yankees say Mattingly still gets the biggest ovations of any Yankee past - and sometimes present - when he's introduced.
